Sentence Therapy for Aphasia
UTILISE (Unification Therapy Integrating LexIcon and SEntences)
If you have any questions please email us* and we will be in touch as soon as possible.
Recruitment for the UTILISE-1 and the UTILISE-2 (app) trials has now finished.
What was this project about?
An aphasic stroke can make it difficult to understand and say sentences. In this project, we tested a new therapy for sentence difficulties in aphasia.
We examined if a new computerised therapy improves the understanding and production of sentences.
We then developed an app version of UTILISE, as this allowed for self-delivered, more intensive therapy. We tested if the app improves the understanding and production of sentences.
Where did the projects take place?
The projects took place at UCL, Department of Language & Cognition.
What did we find so far?
The therapy was acceptable to participants.
For the UTILISE-1 study, we found better production of treated sentences & generalisation to new sentences following the therapy. Participants also showed enhanced quality-of-life ratings and improved sentence production after therapy.
UTILISE-2 analysis is ongoing.
